Quick Look: The FurrIX Virtual Internet Exchange
A fluffy, IPv6‑first, hobbyist‑run vIX built by furries, friends and network nerds
who love tinkering with routers. This is a mid-level doc for interested parties.
What the FurrIX Virtual Internet Exchange Is
A volunteer‑operated, non‑commercial, fully virtual Internet exchange designed for learning,
experimentation and community collaboration. A place where homelabbers, students, sysadmins
and furries can explore real routing concepts without the pressure of production networks or the
worry of “oh shit, I broke that?!” giving them space to breath and tinker. A software‑defined,
IPv6‑native playground that mimics real IXPs while staying firmly hobby‑grade and joy‑driven.
Core Architecture
Layer‑3 only. Fully virtualized. IPv6‑native. Virtual bridges, routers and WireGuard everywhere.
- Software‑defined routing on Proxmox VE
- OpnSense + FRR for BGP
- WireGuard tunnels as the demarcation point
- No Layer‑2 adjacency or broadcast domains
- IPv6 PA /44 routed into the vIX
- All addressing manually assigned with required PTR records
- Fabric workloads isolated on CCD0; noisy community workloads on CCD1
Routing & ASN Model
We aim to maintain stable, predictable routing fabric:
Internal Fabric: AS65300
Member & Peer BGP: AS65320
Member Private ASNs: AS65400–65500
- Members choose between on‑link /64 or full BGP peering
- External peers connect via WireGuard + eBGP
- No default routes accepted
- No IPv4 announcements (IPv4 dropped inside the fabric)
- Prefix acceptance: max 10 prefixes, minimum size /48
- FurrIX announces 2602:f992:e0::/44 to peers
Member Services
FurrIX provides services to our internal exchange members:
- Routed IPv6 prefixes: /64, /62, /60
- Hybrid DNS (ICANN + OpenNIC), 15 Mbps cap, daily log purge
- Stratum‑2 NTP server (time.furrix.zone), shaped to 6 Mbps
Governance & Culture
FurrIX is built on three principles:
- Volunteer autonomy
Volunteers fix, improve, and maintain the network. Just document your work.
- Kindness and clarity
We talk like friends, explain decisions and assume good intentions.
- Sustainability over speed
Burnout kills hobby projects. Volunteers take breaks whenever needed.
FurrIX is run by furries, friends and hobbyists who genuinely enjoy building a tiny,
fluffy corner of the internet together. That’s our core mojo!
External Peering
Settlement‑free, IPv6‑only, WireGuard‑transported eBGP sessions for:
- Hobby networks
- Lab ASNs
- Members build out their own networks
Peers must announce only prefixes they originate and keep traffic reasonable.
FurrIX does not provide transit, only virtual interconnects.
Intended vIX Use
FurrIX is for:
- Homelabs
- Learning
- Experimentation
- Community projects
- IPv6 exploration
- Routing practice
- BGP labs
- Alternative‑namespace tinkering
- Being a part of the broader internet ecosystem
FurrIX is not for:
- Commercial hosting
- Business operations
- High‑volume production workloads
- Replacing your ISP
- Running abusive or insecure systems
